Your dream dress deserves your best self: the ultimate wedding fitness guide
No crash diets, no 5am punishments. Falkirk coach Derek Thomson on the realistic, sustainable way to feel toned, healthy and glowing on your wedding day.
Your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The eyes of your favourite people will be on you, and you deserve to feel as radiant, confident and powerful as you look in that beautiful dress.
Those photographs will last forever, and it's natural to want to feel your absolute best as you walk down the aisle. The good news? Getting into the best shape of your life doesn't require starvation diets or exhausting, unrealistic workouts. It requires a smart, sustainable strategy.
Here is the blueprint for achieving a toned, healthy and glowing look for your big day.
1. Time it right: set a realistic deadline
We all wish for a magic wand, but sustainable transformation takes time. If you want to drop two dress sizes, give yourself several months. If you're aiming to lose a stone and tone up, a realistic window is two to three months. This allows you to achieve your goals without resorting to extreme measures that can harm your health or leave you feeling drained.
Start early. Leave the crash-diet mentality behind and give yourself the grace of time.
The golden rule
2. Work smarter, not harder: plan for real life
Consistency is king, not intensity. You need to be in front of your coach two to three times a week.
Don't sabotage yourself by planning a gruelling 5am, five-days-a-week workout schedule if you know your life is chaotic. What happens when a staff member calls in sick, or your family needs you? Your motivation plummets, and you feel like you've failed.
The better strategy: be ruthlessly realistic. Can you commit to one early-morning session and one weekend-morning session? If you can lock in that schedule and stick to it regardless of life's curveballs, you've already won half the battle.
3. Nutrition is non-negotiable: you can't out-train your fork
Here's the maths that matters: 3,500 calories equals one pound of body fat. If you have three stone to lose, that's a staggering 147,000 calories you need to eliminate.
A super-intense workout might burn 600 calories in an hour. Do you have 245 spare hours to burn that off on a treadmill?
The solution: focus on your diet. Eat real, natural, nutrient-rich foods. By creating a natural caloric deficit through food, you'll shed the pounds and reveal the muscle you're building underneath. The weight loss happens in the kitchen; the muscle definition happens in the gym.
4. Make vegetables the star of your plate
Veggies aren't just a side dish; they are your secret weapon. They are low in calories, packed with nutrients, and crucial for balancing hormones (which accelerates weight loss). But the best part? The incredible nutrients in vibrant vegetables will give you that sought-after wedding glow: shiny hair, clear skin and bright eyes.
5. Trust the process: be accountable to your coach
If your coach asks you to track your food intake, do it. The clients who see the most dramatic results are the ones who embrace accountability. We're here to guide you, but we can't do the work for you.
Transparency with your coach is the fastest route to success.
6. Lift weights to change your shape
If you want “toned”, you need resistance training. Cardio-only routines can actually cause you to lose muscle, leaving you as a smaller version of your current shape.
To sculpt beautiful shoulders, defined arms and a lifted back for your dress, you need to stimulate your muscles with weights. This is how you build the shape you're envisioning for your vows.
The truth about GLP-1 medications (Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic)
Couldn't I just take a shot and make this easier?
You can absolutely lose weight with GLP-1 drugs, but there is a significant catch. Research shows that up to 40% of the weight lost on these medications is muscle mass.
Losing muscle is dangerous. It slows down your metabolism and destroys your natural shape. If you drop weight without training, you risk becoming “skinny fat”: a smaller version of your current shape, rather than the strong, toned and sculpted version you deserve.
Would you rather be a smaller you, or a better, stronger, more radiant you? The choice is yours.
