Getting married in Ayrshire
Ayrshire gives you coast and country within an hour of Glasgow — which means dramatic scenery without asking your guests to make a weekend of it. The coast is the appeal and the thing to plan around.
Close enough to be easy
The practical case for Ayrshire is distance. Much of the county is under an hour from Glasgow and its airport, so guests can travel in on the day rather than booking two nights, and suppliers based in the city will travel without a surcharge that a Highland venue would attract.
That does not mean transport plans itself. Rural Ayrshire venues sit on country roads with little to no taxi cover late at night, so if your reception is outside a town, a minibus at the end of the evening is usually the most appreciated thing you book.
The coast, honestly
A clifftop or beach ceremony on the Ayrshire coast is spectacular and entirely legal — Scotland allows a binding ceremony outdoors anywhere. What the photographs do not show is the wind, which on an exposed west-facing shore can make an unamplified ceremony inaudible and a veil unmanageable.
None of that is a reason not to do it. It is a reason to ask about shelter, to talk to your celebrant about a microphone, and to agree how late the call can be made to move indoors. Ask your venue what they actually do when the weather turns, rather than whether they have a wet-weather option.
Golf weeks move the county
Ayrshire's championship links courses host major tournaments, and in those weeks accommodation across the coast is taken and priced for the event. It is a smaller effect than Edinburgh in August but it works the same way, and it catches couples who did not think to look.
Check the golf calendar for your year before you commit to a date, particularly if you are marrying near Troon or Turnberry and expect guests to stay locally.
What to ask an Ayrshire venue
- What do you do with an outdoor ceremony when the wind gets up, and how late can we decide?
- Is there shelter near the ceremony spot, or is the alternative indoors entirely?
- How do guests get back to their accommodation at the end of the night?
- How many rooms are on site, and what is nearby if we need more?
- Is there anything on locally that weekend — golf, events — that will affect rooms?
- Which suppliers travel here regularly, and do any charge extra to?
