How to book hair & beauty in Scotland

Hair and makeup is the only supplier whose work starts before everyone else's and has to hold for sixteen hours, through photographs, weather and a ceilidh. It is booked on timing and on trials as much as on style.

The morning schedule is the whole job

Work backwards from when you need to be ready, not forwards from when everyone wakes up. Each person takes real time, and the bride is usually done last so the finish is fresh — which means the whole morning has to be planned around a fixed end point.

Ask how many artists will be there. One person doing hair and makeup for six is a very long morning; two working in parallel changes it completely. If your party is large, that second artist is usually worth more than any upgrade to the package.

What the trial is actually for

A trial is not only about choosing a look. It tells you whether the products suit your skin, whether the style holds on your hair, and whether you get on with the person who will be in the room at seven in the morning on your wedding day.

Go to the trial with your hair in the condition it will be in on the day, and take a photograph at the end in daylight rather than in the mirror. Makeup that looks right in a salon can read very differently in a camera flash or in Scottish grey light — which is what most of your photographs will be taken in.

Practical questions

  • Is the trial included, and does it happen at your studio or our venue?
  • How long will you need for each person on the morning?
  • Do you travel to us, and is travel charged separately?
  • Will you stay for touch-ups after the ceremony?
  • What do you use to make it last, and do we get a touch-up kit?
  • Can you work with veils, hairpieces and a change of style for the evening?
