About Maureen Kettle — Humanist Celebrant
Let's create a ceremony you'll never forget!
Hi, I'm Maureen, a humanist celebrant with Humanist Ceremonies Scotland, and I've spent the last decade creating warm, fun and relaxed legal marriage ceremonies for hundreds of wonderful couples across Scotland.
Firstly, huge congratulations! If you're reading this, chances are you're planning one of the happiest days of your life, and I'd love to help make it truly unforgettable.
Choosing your celebrant is about so much more than finding someone to conduct your ceremony. It's about finding someone you genuinely click with; someone who gets to know you, understands what makes your relationship special, and creates a ceremony that feels completely and unmistakably yours.
From our very first chat, right up to your wedding day, we'll create your ceremony together. We'll meet in person or by video call, I'll ask lots of questions, take plenty of notes, and if you're up for it, I'll even give you some fun 'homework'! We'll explore everything from who made the first move to the adventures you've shared, the people you love most, and the stories that make your relationship uniquely yours.
Those little details are what bring a ceremony to life. My job is to weave them together into a ceremony filled with love, laughter, warmth and personality.
I want you to feel completely at ease from the moment your ceremony begins — that way you can relax, be yourselves and soak up every second. There'll be laughter, a few happy tears and plenty of smiles, while the legal parts of your marriage are always delivered with the sincerity they deserve.
If you'd like to include any Scottish traditions such as handfasting, sharing a drink from a quaich or holding an oathing stone as you say your vows (or something completely unique to you both), we'll make it part of your ceremony in a way that feels natural and meaningful.
I've had the privilege of marrying couples everywhere from castles and country houses to beaches, woodlands and back gardens, but whatever the setting, it's always the warmth, laughter and love that people remember.
So, if you're looking for a celebrant who'll put you at ease, make the planning enjoyable, and create a ceremony that's unmistakably yours, I'd be delighted to be part of your wedding journey.
If you'd like a chat, I'd love to hear from you. We'll get to know each other, talk through your plans, and you can decide whether I'm the right fit for you both… and, of course, make sure I'm not a complete nutter too!

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book?
You should be looking to book your celebrant as soon as you've booked your venue and have your date! Some couples book their suppliers two years out, and some leave it until closer to their wedding date — but that naturally restricts their choice. I'd suggest getting in touch sooner rather than later, so we can pop a date in our diaries to meet up and see if you feel I'm a good 'fit' for you as a couple.
Do you travel across Scotland?
Yes! Although I'm based in Cumbernauld, in Central Scotland, if you feel I'm the perfect celebrant for you, I'm happy to travel throughout the Scottish mainland and its beautiful islands to conduct your marriage ceremony. Not only do I get to marry amazing couples, but I also get to visit some of Scotland's most beautiful places along the way.
How does the enquiry process work?
After your initial enquiry, I'll email you my Information Pack to read through, and we'll pop a date in our diaries for an initial chat — either in person or by video call. When we meet, I'll ask you loads of questions to get you thinking about your ceremony — your ideas, the vibe you're after and the various elements you can include — and, if you're up for it, I'll send you off with some fun 'homework'. Afterwards I'll send a 'chunkier' email with everything we chatted through: example vows, ring-exchange wording, poetry and readings, and symbolic gestures. I always encourage couples to head home for a chat to be sure I'm the celebrant for you — though I often get a call from the car saying they'd love me to be their celebrant! To secure your date, I ask for a non-refundable booking fee of £100; once that's received, your date is reserved exclusively for you in my diary.
What happens after we book?
Once you've booked me, I'll confirm receipt of your £100 deposit and send you a Confirmation of Booking with all the important details — your date, venue, fee, and what we'll each be responsible for. Then I'll leave you to enjoy the rest of your wedding planning; of course, if you have any questions along the way, I'm always just an email, WhatsApp or phone call away. I'll guide you through everything you need to know about your M10 Marriage Notice forms, including when and where to submit them. Around 8–12 weeks before your wedding, I'll begin writing your ceremony — I'll ask for your 'homework' by then, and once I've written your first draft I'll send it over so we can tweak it until it's perfect. In the final few weeks we'll meet again to run through the ceremony, confirm who's doing what on the day, and make sure everything is in place. Then, all that's left for me to do is to see you on your wedding day, conduct your ceremony, and declare you married!
