How to book cake makers in Scotland
The cake is a small budget line that does a lot of visible work — it is usually the only thing in the room you cut, photograph and serve. It is also one of the easiest bookings to get right, provided you order early enough.
Size it for how it will actually be eaten
A cake sized for a formal dessert portion for every guest is considerably larger than one sized for coffee-sized slices handed round in the evening. Decide which you are doing before you ask for a quote, because it changes the tier count and the price.
If you want the look of a tall cake without paying for cake nobody eats, ask about a dummy tier — a polystyrene base iced to match — or a smaller display cake with a plain cutting cake in the kitchen. Both are common and neither shows in photographs.
What changes the price
Flavour barely moves the cost. What moves it is labour: sugar flowers, hand-painting, intricate piping and fondant work are all priced by the hour it takes to do them. A simple semi-naked cake in the same size can cost a fraction of a fully decorated one.
Fresh flowers are cheaper than sugar ones but need to be food-safe and wired by someone who knows which stems are toxic — agree whether your florist or your cake maker is doing it, because it is the detail that most often falls between the two.
Practical questions
- How far ahead should we order, and when do you close our date?
- Is a tasting included, and is it charged separately?
- Do you deliver and set up at the venue, or do we collect?
- Who supplies the stand, and does it need returning?
- Can you work around allergies, gluten or a vegan cake?
- What happens to the cake between the photographs and the evening?
